Welcome to the Morehead Honors College! New Student Orientation marks the beginning of your academic journey at UGA. Most orientation sessions span two days in May, June, or July. Honors students may attend any available orientation session; there is no session designated specifically for Honors students, though spaces for Honors students are limited at each session. New Student Orientation, including the orientation calendar and orientation registration, is managed by the Office of Student Affairs.
Preparing for your orientation session—action items:
- Register for orientation through your application status page.
- Complete or prepare for all items on the orientation to-do list.
- Complete the Academic Advising: Step One Form to help your advisor prepare. Be sure to complete the appropriate form for First-Year Students or Transfer Students.
- Review the Honors pre‑orientation information in the Honors Advising newsletter before attending.
- We are now using the Smore platform for the Honors College’s Advising Newsletter. Make sure to read these emails, as they will contain important updates and resources.
- The pre‑orientation information will help you prepare for advising and registration and clarify the role of your Honors advisor.
During orientation, students meet with their academic advisor on day two. After advising, you may begin registering for classes once all holds have been cleared. Because advising is conducted individually, session capacity is limited and earlier sessions fill quickly. While we encourage you to register for the earliest session available, your advisor will help you identify courses that fit your degree requirements regardless of when you attend. Once matriculated during your first semester, Honors students benefit from early registration for all future terms while enrolled in the Morehead Honors College. After you have attended orientation, been advised, and begun registering for courses, be sure to register for the one‑hour Introduction to Honors seminar, HONS 1000H.
A note regarding Advisor Assignment:
Advisor assignment is based on your declared major, so be sure you have the appropriate major declared in Athena before you attend orientation. Advisor assignments are made during orientation—you cannot meet with an advisor before you attend orientation.
Honors advisors advise students for many (but not all) majors in the Franklin College, as well as all intended Terry or intended Grady majors. For majors in other UGA colleges, an advisor from your college will advise and clear you for registration. You will be assigned an Honors advisor who can answer any questions you may have about the Morehead Honors College after your orientation. That advisor will email you following your orientation session.
