Honors Option information for faculty
Honors Option courses are non-Honors undergraduate level courses numbered 3000 or higher in which an Honors student can earn Honors credit by completing an additional paper or project. The student must submit a completed application by the tenth day of classes following the end of drop/add.
All assistant professors, associate professors, and full professors may offer Honors credit to a student in their upper-level courses. Upper-level courses taught by academic professionals, visiting lecturers, or instructors may be offered for Honors Option if the application is signed by the head of the department in which the course is taught. Students cannot earn Honors credit for courses taught by graduate assistants.
The Morehead Honors College does not have any specific expectations for the additionally assigned work, as long as it goes beyond that which is otherwise listed on the course syllabus. Honors gives individual instructors the freedom to explore different opportunities and determine what is most fitting in each situation. This can include:
- Involving the student in a course-related research project
- Giving the student a more in-depth class experience study through additional readings and small assignments
- Working throughout the semester with the student on a special project
- Allowing the student to prepare a course lesson and give a class presentation
- Assigning the student a comprehensive annotated bibliography or significant paper
It is up to the instructor and the student to agree on what the additional assignment will be and to what extent the work will contribute to the final grade for the course (if at all).
At the end of the term, the instructor must return a Part II form indicating that the student completed the additional assignment(s) satisfactorily. The course is not changed to an Honors section on the student’s transcript; rather, following the end of the term after the instructor confirms completion of the assignment(s), a comment will be added to the student’s transcript indicating that Honors Option credit was earned for the course.
