Joanna Keen, Tanzania, 2016-2017

Joanna Keen, a fourth-year student from Johns Creek, is majoring in environmental engineering. She was awarded a Boren Scholarship through the African Flagship Languages Initiative and will study Swahili this fall in Arusha, Tanzania. She will continue her studies while completing a spring internship in Karagwe, Tanzania.

Joanna served as a research assistant examining violence prevention in the College of Public Health and taught non-violent communication to local alternative school students as a volunteer for the Georgia Conflict Center. In the long term, she hopes to work in international violence prevention through the U.S. State Department’s countering violent extremism programs.
