Working this year as an English Teaching Assistant at the Federal University of Sao Carlos, in Sao Paulo state, Caroline says she hopes to learn as much as she teaches and to set a good example for future ETAs in Brazil.
“I hope my hard work will establish a solid base for future ETAs,” she says. “My experience here so far as been an incredible opportunity. Before arriving, I hoped to learn more about multicultural education in Brazilian schools; I have learned a great deal already through work with teachers and through participation in research groups, but this semester, I hope to have more hands-on experience at schools.
“I also hope to set up an exchange program with a U.S. university, so that Letras students will have an opportunity to study English abroad.”
Caroline has a full plate with her Fulbright responsibilities.
“I work with students who are studying English and Portuguese and completing a teacher certification program,” she says. “I also assist in teaching a monthly workshop for public-school teachers of English, and participate in two research groups at the university. My main objectives in the classroom are to provide students with opportunities for speaking practice and to serve as a cultural liaison.”
Caroline’s Fulbright year ends in November, at which time she plans to return to the United States and pursue a Master of Education degree. In the long-run, Caroline intends to work in educational technology or in the classroom.
